As many have predicted, Nikon has released another firmware update for the Z9…the new version is 5.0. This update adds some of the recent Z8 firmware updates including being able to make the red square focus point thicker and easier to see (custom A11). Also, you can choose ‘Cycle AF-area mode’ to toggle between auto focus modes on any button you choose. Since I don’t shoot much video, I set the red video button next to the shutter button to toggle through single point, wide area large, 3D and Auto-area as my four autofocus modes. I’ve come to like toggling to a new mode more than using the ‘F’ buttons on the front of the camera, since I normally want to stay in the new auto focus mode I choose (versus holding down a ‘F’ custom function button.
There are some other great new features including putting a time frame on when your auto capture takes place, an airplane detection mode, portrait retouch modes, new zoom playback options and more. It is terrific that Nikon continues to do significant updates to the Z9, this camera just gets better and better. Here is a link to Firmware 5.0 for the Z9.
On another note, Nikon just bought Red. If your not familiar with Red, they make incredible high end video cameras that are used on loads of TV and movies productions. Acquiring Red jump starts Nikon way out in the video realm, and there should be some nice cross over to still photography such as new sensors developed by Red. Can’t wait.
