I had someone recently ask me what was ‘the holy trinity of primes’ (or zooms)? Are these some kind of special lenses? Who makes them? Where can you buy them? Are their unholy versions?
Yes, where did that term come from? I’m not exactly sure, probably created by a camera company hoping to sell more lenses. The holy trinity of primes refers to three lenses ranging from super wide angle to 200mm, originally prime lenses but now more often zooms. And most importantly, these lenses are fast at F2.8. For Nikon users this means the 14-24mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm F2.8. This trinity gives you a wide range, high quality glass, and the ability to explore depth of field and bokeh shooting at F2.8. These lenses each cost more than $2000 a piece. They are top of their class in this range.
While the trinity of lenses still exists, today many photographers may have one or two of Cree likes to bring her 24-120mm F4 for a little more reach. The trinity lenses are generally the best zoom lenses a company can produce in the 14-200mm range.
I’m packing for a trip to photograph along RT 66 right now, and interestingly enough I am bringing three lenses…the holy trinity of primes. Sure sounds good, hopefully it inspires me to create exciting images!
