Use the Dehaze filter the other way

August 8, 2018 • Shooting Tips

Crescent City, CA. redwoods park

I have been working on images from my recent trip to the redwoods, and have used some filters and plugins that might interest others in their post processing techniques.  Take a look at the image above.

My goal: enhance the fog, and do anything to add to the ‘mythical forest’ concept.  To enhance fog, my first step was increase Clarity.  I used a strong setting for clarity, which helped bump up the fog.  Next, I added some contrast by simply dragging the Contrast slider to the right.  Not much, but enough to add some texture in the tree trunks.  Finally, I used the Dehaze slider in the opposite direction (to the left!).  If I pull the slider to the right I reduce my fog.  But if I slightly drag the slider to the left, it actually increases the milky fog look.  Perfect!

But I wasn’t done yet.  To soften up the image and add an ethereal feel, I used OnOne 10 effects, Landscape actions, and chose the summer effect.  This adds a nice soft glow to the image.
