I’m getting ready to head out to the Redwoods to teach a workshop, and I am super excited. I spent a week out there last summer and created some of my favorite images from 2017. While the workshop is focused on landscapes, I’m bringing multiple speed lights. Why? Because I have some ideas I want to attempt in that massive, magical forest of trees.
If you still think flash is not something that interests you, fair enough. But you might want to read this story I just did for Digital Photo Magazine. Titled Essential Flash, it summarizes some situations where flash really saves the day. Some concepts are obvious, others not so much. One photography principle I have learned through the school of hard knocks is ‘be flexible, and consider all the options.’ I can’t count the number of assignments that took an unexpected turn and required outside the box solutions. Flash may not interest you, but the more techniques you know, the better you can bring your vision to reality.
