When Nikon added firmware 2.0 for the Z9, an incredible camera just got even better. One feature they added is called Pre-Release Capture. What is this? With this feature you are able to buffer images with the back button (or shutter) pressed halfway down. Basically the camera is recording images on the buffer, but it won’t record them to the flash card until you press the shutter all the way down. What happens is you are able to capture images up to one second before hitting the shutter. It’s Nikon’s version of a time machine…you can go back in time one second!
Pre-Release Capture is a game changer for wildlife and sports photographers. Instead of missing the action, you get the shot, even if you are a little slow hitting the shutter. Imagine a bird getting ready to take off. If you miss the initial takeoff, with Pre-Release Capture you actually don’t miss it. I just shot a story for Nikon highlighting the setup and how it works.
