We had an incredible time photographing sandhill cranes last winter in New Mexico. Bosque Del Apache never disappoints, every year is different. Last year we spent some time at Bernado, another refuge to the north. Cree and I were headed to the airport our final night, and decided to drop in for one last shoot. The refuge was empty, most photographers were at crane festival events in Socorro. We stopped at one pond, a few cranes there, cloudy skies…but you never know what will happen in New Mexico with sunset. Incredibly birds started filling in the pond, and at one point a perfect group started walking across the pond at the same time the sunset exploded. Who knew? I was in shock, this image was going to be one for the books! Image at top…
Nikon just published an article I did for them on sandhill crane photography, you can read it here. We still have a few spots open for our 2027 trip, join us and see what magic happens this year!
