I have been writing stories for Digital Photo, Digital Photo Pro and Outdoor Photographer for many years. These magazines are a bargain ($20/year), and offer lots of technique and gear reviews. In an age where so much is online, I love getting a printed magazine in my mailbox. I can flip through the pages at leisure, and read up on technique or exotic locations.
The current cover image is from our workshop last summer in the Redwoods. This forest is simply magical and sublime, and should be on every photographers bucket list. We time our workshop to get the driest conditions with lots of sun. And this is the perfect time to get fog in the trees backlit by sunshine.
This particular image happened when a participant and I decided to explore a side trail on the way back to the car. We really didn’t expect much, but then we came around a corner and saw fog filtering through the trees on the trail. As he started to take images of the scene, I decided having a human element would be a great addition to this image. You never know what you will discover hiking around the corner!
We still have a few spots left on our Redwoods/Oregon Coast workshop next summer. Come join us and photograph the tallest trees in the world.
